Spring this year has brought a profusion of wood sorrel. It's everywhere, in carpets on the wood floor, and in little niches in among stones and fallen branches. But along by the stream through the woodland there are other delights .

I've seen both the plants in the last three photos when walking up towards Piper House Gate last week and wondered what they are - thought the yellow one might be a hawkqweed of some sort? The other I can't even guess at.Do you happen to know?
I've been doing a bit of research and am now wondering if the one I thought was a hawkweed is actually coltsfoot? It was going/gone to seed and when I first saw it I thought 'coltsfoot' but it was taller than I expected so I decided not. Am I right?
Hello Rowan, I'm sure you're right. When I saw them my first thought was they were like hawkweeds or hawkbits, but wrong time of year. Anyway a tricky family sometimes to identify. It's the season for coltsfoot and the stems, long as they are seem to fit. It's just that I tend to see coltsfoot in those parts of Blacka near the main road where limestone's been used.
