Great Spaces

Among the trees liable to be destroyed when  the chain-saw group attached to SRWT has nothing better to do is Larch. It joins Sycamore and Scots Pine on their 'unwanted list' because it doesn't fit in with some idea they've downloaded from one site or another. It's claimed that it wasn't here 'originally', whenever that was; which means these excellent trees have something in common with the wildlife trust who are incomers themselves. Trees like these can be targetted at any time outside the bird breeding season: you can arrive one day and find Johnny Chain-Saw has been busy the previous day.

The best and most fantastical spaces on Blacka are where Larch and Birch combine to create a glorious management-free zone of assymetrical combinations, sometimes joined by Holly, Oak, Rowan or Hawthorn. This should be the lair of a wolf pack but is commonly used by both of Blacka's largest native mammals as shelter against the elements.
