Walking the lanes around farmland in the pre-intensive era (largely pre-motorised too) it was common to see family parties of birds such as linnets and yellowhammers, newly emerged from their nests. Those summer school holidays characterised by freedom to roam and explore are a great loss. This is not a myth of a golden age; just a reminder that whatever might have been gained something infinitely valuable has been cast aside.
