Blackbirds

They were still singing this afternoon in the eastern parts of Blacka's woodland each responding to the other's last phrase. There is no part of the natural world that is so touched with perfection and which would be more missed. Fortunately blackbirds are thriving across the world spreading their inspired music from New Zealand to Iceland.

An excellent BBC Radio programme broadcast yesterday but available online came as close as anything to defining the special appeal this bird has for so many people.

Throughout the winter our feeding station hardly saw a male blackbird yet each morning a female welcomed us with no fear helping herself to the scraps on the wall. Since then the reverse has happened and only the male has come at times with a young one and at others breaking off from a heavenly recital.
