These woodlands on Blacka do not tick the boxes that are essential for some. They are not ancient woods. Indicator species are not present. Very old trees would be desirable to achieve maximum diversity. But they are on the way. Decay and falling are never far away and a sense of ageing. And they have character in abundance and visual appeal par excellence. Much has been untouched and ungrazed for many years if you put aside the small numbers of deer. This means there is lots of ground layer vegetation and fallen trees over which it grows. These woods are wonderful.
