Knee-jerk Culling?
I hope I've made my views clear to Eastern Moors Partnership on their proposal to 'reduce the deer population' on Bigmoor (aka killing hinds, which will presumably end up as meat in the National Trust shops).
There's need for much more reflection based on a lot of evidence after an unusual summer and autumn in which very few deer were seen on neighbouring Blacka. Why did it happen that so many of the deer from lower levels finish up spending so long on Bigmoor when they normally return to Blacka and neighbouring parts from September on? Could it, conceivably, be partly due to new fencing along the road east of Bigmoor that prevented them moving freely across towards Blacka?
Deer must be allowed to move around freely, even persuaded to do so. If the result of culling and other management interventions on Bigmoor means local people who use Blacka see fewer deer that will be another reason for disliking managers.
