Cuckoo Calling at 7.15 am
Despite the squelch underfoot these are some of the top days in the year. Constant activity and tranquility without silence - birds calling and singing- make the early hours in May well worth the effort. Curlew and skylark are again prominent at the highest point still mercifully free from sheep (their wails and bleats can overpower the more subtle sounds). In the woodland fringes scores of warblers bubble away like a hill stream, and thrushes show that with good vocal technique you don't need amplification.
Meanwhile the small group of red deer look a bit scruffy as if the end of winter is bringing a much needed moult.
